What are your thoughts regarding taking Lamictal and pregnancy?

I have been diagnosed with Bipolar disorder and have now reached 100 mg after a slow titration. Its been about 2 1/2 months since I started the medication. My husband and I would like to have another child, however I am worried about the Lamictal in my system. Is this medication harmful in pregnancy, and are there other alternatives?

I would discuss this question directly with your physician and bring up your concerns. Lamictal is a risk C category medication in that some animal studies show adverse effects, but there are no controlled studies in humans. There is a pregnancy exposure registry for Lamictal 1-800-336-2176. Also women who become pregnant may require increased doses because plasma concentrations of lamictal may be reduced in pregnant women.
