BOARD ELIGIBLE

What does it mean when they say that a Psychiatrist is Not Board Certified but is BOARD ELIGLIBLE. What does BOARD ELIGIBLE actually mean and what are the requirements in Massachusetts to be considered BOARD ELIGIBLE?

To be board certified, a psychiatrist must have passed the psychiatry board exam. This exam is a standardized exam that psychiatrists can take. Many times, places that employ psychiatrists require them to pass this exam within a number of years. On the other hand, board eligible means that the doctor has completed psychiatry residency but has not taken this exam. The exam is very costly and not always necessary for the psychiatrist's needs, so some psychiatrists opt to not take it. Let me know if this clears things up!
