Among the First MDs to Use TMS
Therapy: A Novel FDA-Approved
Treatment for Depression
Transcranial Stimulation, or “TMS therapy,”
is a safe and effective,1,2 new FDA-approved
treatment for depression. During TMS therapy,
the front of the head where the frontal cortex
of the brain is located, is exposed to an MRI-
strength magnetic field. The electric signaling
in the frontal cortex of the brains of depressed
patients has been found to be dysfunctional;
however, this deficiency has been shown to
improve with TMS treatment.2 Because TMS is
administered externally, it does not cause the
side effects that are typically seen with ingested
antidepressant medications. Dr. Ratush is one of
the first physicians in the United States to offer
TMS therapy.
